What Is Dermaroller Treatment?

Dermaroller treatment is a form of microneedling in which very fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating a wound-healing response and new collagen formation.

Quick answer: A dermaroller is one type of microneedling device. The treatment may be used for selected acne scars, uneven texture and other concerns after dermatologic assessment. Results develop gradually and more than one session may be needed.

The basics

How does a dermaroller work?

A dermaroller is a handheld roller fitted with multiple fine needles. When used in a controlled clinical setting, the needles create tiny channels in the skin. This process is part of microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy.

The American Academy of Dermatology explains that microneedling creates small punctures that trigger the skin’s healing response and stimulate collagen. The resulting remodelling can gradually make some scars and textural irregularities less noticeable.

The depth and technique matter. Professional microneedling is not the same as casually rolling an at-home device across the skin. If you are considering the procedure, see our main Dermaroller Treatment in Chennai page for clinical assessment and treatment information.

Treatment goals

What can dermaroller treatment help with?

Acne scars

Microneedling can be considered for selected depressed acne scars because collagen remodelling may make the scars less noticeable. Scar type matters, and active acne generally needs to be controlled first.

Uneven skin texture

By stimulating controlled healing and collagen production, microneedling may improve the appearance of uneven texture in appropriately selected patients.

Other scars

Dermatologists may use microneedling for certain surgical or injury-related scars. Raised scars and keloids require a different assessment and are not treated in the same way as depressed scars.

Selected cosmetic concerns

Medical microneedling is also used for concerns such as fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven tone and some forms of pigmentation, depending on the individual skin condition.

For acne scarring specifically, our upcoming guide to dermaroller treatment for acne scars explains why ice-pick, rolling and boxcar scars may require different approaches. You can also read about Acne Treatment in Chennai.

The appointment

What happens during a microneedling session?

Treatment begins with examination of the skin and discussion of the concern being treated. The skin is cleansed and, depending on treatment depth and area, a topical anaesthetic may be used for comfort.

The microneedling device is then passed systematically over the treatment area to create controlled microchannels. The exact technique, depth and number of passes are chosen according to the indication, treatment area and skin characteristics.

After treatment, the skin may look red or darker than usual and may feel warm, tight or mildly swollen. The AAD notes that these reactions commonly settle within several days to about a week. Your dermatologist will provide specific aftercare instructions.

Results

When will you see improvement?

Microneedling is not an instant resurfacing treatment. Collagen remodelling takes time, so improvement develops gradually over weeks and can continue over several months.

A series of sessions may be recommended. The AAD notes that acne-scar treatment may involve several microneedling sessions spaced weeks apart. The appropriate number and interval vary according to scar type, treatment depth, response and the overall treatment plan.

Realistic expectations: Microneedling can make suitable scars and texture concerns less noticeable, but it does not guarantee complete scar removal. Acne-scar treatment often combines more than one technique.

Safety

Are there side effects or reasons to delay treatment?

Temporary redness or darkening, swelling, burning or tenderness can occur after microneedling. Infection, scarring and persistent pigment change are less common but become more concerning when treatment is performed improperly or aftercare is not followed.

Microneedling may need to be postponed or avoided in situations such as an active skin infection, inflamed or deep active acne in the treatment area, recent significant sun exposure, poor wound healing, certain immune problems or a tendency to develop keloids. Medication history also matters, including current or recent isotretinoin use.

This is why dermatologist assessment before treatment is important, particularly for darker skin tones, active acne, pigmentation concerns or a history of abnormal scarring.

DIY devices

Is an at-home dermaroller the same treatment?

No. At-home rollers and professional microneedling should not be treated as equivalent. The AAD cautions that home devices can irritate or damage skin and, if they pierce the skin, may lead to infection, scarring or spread of infections such as warts or herpes.

Clinical treatment allows a dermatologist to assess whether microneedling is appropriate, choose the treatment depth, maintain appropriate hygiene and plan aftercare. More aggressive rolling at home does not mean better collagen production and can increase risk.

Common questions

Dermaroller treatment FAQ

Is dermaroller treatment the same as microneedling?

A dermaroller is one type of device used for microneedling. Other professional microneedling devices include automated pens and radiofrequency microneedling systems.

Does dermaroller treatment remove acne scars completely?

No treatment can promise complete removal. Microneedling may make suitable depressed acne scars less noticeable, and some patients need a combination of treatments.

How many sessions are needed?

The number varies with the concern, scar type, treatment depth and response. Acne-scar treatment commonly requires a series rather than a single session.

Is there downtime?

Downtime is usually limited, but temporary redness or darkening, swelling, tenderness or a sunburn-like feeling can occur for several days.

Can I use a dermaroller at home?

Home devices are not equivalent to dermatologist-performed microneedling. Improper or aggressive use can cause irritation, infection, scarring or pigment changes.
